Author Biography

Filipa Ribeiro da Silva, University of Macau

Filipa Ribeiro da Silva (1974) is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of History of the University of Macau, China; member of the Global Collaboratory for the History of Labour Relations at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam (Netherlands); and Honorary Fellow of the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE) at the University of Hull (U.K.). Between 2009 and 2013, Filipa was also member of the Demography Hub of the Project Clio-Infrastructure at the IISH and of the Project Slave Trade, Slavery and Abolition in European Histories and Identities, financed by the European Union 7th Framework Program, at WISE. Filipa received her PhD at Leiden University in 2009, after studying History and Portuguese overseas expansion at the New University of Lisbon in Portugal, where she obtained her BA honors (1996) and Master degree (2002). Dutch and Portuguese in Western Africa: Empires, Merchants and the Atlantic System, 1580-1674 (Leiden: Brill, 2011) is her latest book.
