This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Journal of World-Systems Research. One of the founding editors, Chris Chase-Dunn, has included a reflection on the rise and evolution of the journal, and we have also included a list of some of the top-downloaded articles from each decade. Along with several research articles we are also pleased to publish a commentary by Boaventura de Sousa Santos on AI.

Our JWSR editorial team is pleased to announce the publication of the Journal of World-Systems Research Summer/Autumn 2023 Special Issue Immanuel Wallerstein: The Legacies.

This issue takes us on a journey through the breadth of what world-systems analysis offers not just to the field of sociology but to a trans-disciplinary, even anti-disciplinary social science. It features the special section “Immanuel Wallerstein: The Legacies,” compiled by guest editor Christopher Chase-Dunn, a series of essays expanded and reimagined from the “Old Heads Discuss Immanuel Wallerstein’s Ideas” at a conference last year. Among the other myriad contributions is the insightful essay by Jason W. Moore “Power, Profit, and Prometheanism, Part II: Superexploitation in the Web of Life.”

The Journal of World-Systems Research is available free online at jwsr.pitt.edu It is the official journal of the American Sociological Association’s section on Political Economy of the World-System and one of the most established scholarly, peer-reviewed, open access journals. Much of this issue takes up the topic of engaging with anti-systemic movements and anti-fascist movements in various ways, from the perspective of world history and the immediate present. In addition to a number of engaging includes a guest symposium by Marilyn Grell-Brisk and Christopher Chase-Dunn on “Complexity Theory and Physical, Biological, and Sociocultural Evolution;” as well as several of compelling pieces of new scholarship in our essays and commentaries sections.

Two JWSR authors win top article awards

We are pleased to announce the following awards to JWSR authors:
- Tanya Golash-Boza received honorable mention in the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award of the Race, Class, and Gender Section of the ASA for her article, “Parallels Between Mass Incarceration and Mass Deportation: An Intersectional Analysis,” published in Journal of World-Systems Research 22(2) (2016).
- Irene Pang received the PEWS Section Terence K. Hopkins Student Paper Award for her article, “Banking Is for Others: Contradictions of Microfinance in the Ghanaian Market,” Journal of World-Systems Research 22(2) (2016).
